The Mother City Welcomes New R700M Tsogo Sun Hotel Complex
Two new economy hotels were launched in the Mother City this month, giving the South African casino and resort operators, Tsogo Sun, the lion’s share of central Cape Town’s hotel accommodation. The development, which cost R700 million to build, incorporates two hotels in a 19 storey complex. The StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl has just over 300 rooms, while the more select service SunSquare Cape Town City Town has 202 rooms. The hotels are located on the corners of Bree and Strand Street and Buitengracht.
The Operations Manager for Tsogo Sun, John van Rooyen said that there are so many four and five star hotels in Cape Town, that a specific gap in the two and three star hotel market was quickly identified in the city.
“It was that market gap that gave Tsogo Sun a reason to embark on these select services hotels on the corner of Buitengracht, Bree and Strand Streets,” he said.
“I must say that, to date, the 504 rooms have been so well received by the domestic and international market. The hotel industry in this specific location has been boosted by the city center rejuvenation over the past five to eight years. Tsogo Sun felt that there were not great quality two and three star hotels in this locality.”
Van Rooyen pointed out that Bree Street has become very popular with its fancy restaurants and excellent pubs, so that when people stay in the new hotels, they are able to wine and dine there. He said that patrons could walk to other parts of the city center to other facilities such as the Waterfront, shopping centers and the Cape Town Stadium.
“It will be very convenient when the World Rugby Sevens will be played at the stadium,” he pointed out.
On the subject of sports, Van Rooyen said that the new hotels come to fill a gap when it came to accommodating visiting teams. He said that the casino group found that most of the top teams prefer staying in city center hotels, although there is still enough business for Newlands hotels.
Air crew, government, international travelers and leisure visitors have all expressed an interest in the new Tsogo Sun hotels in Cape Town.
